In 1877, a new type of national bank note was printed. This was the first national banknote printed in Japan. The design was by Edoardo Chiossone, an Italian printmaker who worked for the Japanese government. At the time, foreigners who worked for the Japanese government were known as Oyatoi-Gaikokujin (お雇い外国人). This bill was also called Suihei-Satsu (水兵札) because of the image of the navy.
