Hiroshima Appeals – Burning Butterflies

10

Yusaku Kamekura produced a piece in 1983 for the "Hiroshima Appeals" project, which was organized by the Japan Graphic Designers Association and the Hiroshima International Cultural Foundation. In his work "Fire Butterflies," Kamakura was the first artist to contribute to the collection of 21 pieces. According to these two organizations, the goal of the initiative is to draw attention to "'Hiroshima's Spirit,' which transcended words to deeply transmit the prayers and intentions of Hiroshima, which endured the devastation of the first atomic bomb unleashed on mankind." Kamekura departed from his customary creative approach in this piece, which may reflect how strongly the artist feels about the subject of this specific artwork.
