Stargate Sequence- “2001: A Space Odyssey”

1021
"Adopted by the following generations, the slit scan is just one example of how exchanges between the avant-garde and the commercial drive the history of motion graphics: Special- effects artist Doug Trumbull further developed the slit scan to create the legendary 'Star Gate' interdimensional travel sequence for Stanley Kubrick’s '2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)'. Trumbull then collaborated with Harry Marks in designing the ABC Movie of the Week promo (1969), which applies the abstract visuals of the time-space continuum to the network’s logo. This extravagant gesture radically transformed the look of television graphics—and represents a prescient twinkle-in-the-eye in terms of future uses of the computer."—–Louise Sandhaus, Earthquakes, Mudslides, Fires & Riots: California and Graphic Design 1936-1986, p120
