Main Entrance Doors for Scoren House
"Although technically not a California graphic designer, Girard wielded a
considerable cross-pollinating influence via his collaborations with many Left Coast designers including the Eameses and the Neuharts. Their common bond was a love of folk art, a passion shared by many others, including Northern California dentist Robert Scoren. Scoren approached Girard about doing some work to enliven his dental office and then commissioned him to collaborate with architect Don Knorr on his home. Girard’s gleeful designs added character throughout the house. A colorful grid of 96 cupboards stretched for 55 feet
along the wall from the dining room through the kitchen, each with a fiberboard front sporting a different Girard textile in a mix of brights, neutrals, solids, and patterns. Girard also repurposed handbags from Crete as upholstery for a pair of benches. An early supergraphic, the design for the front door flips and repeats 'RSCOREN' to create a gridlike pattern, and its glossy surface contains another, more subtle reference to the client’s identity in that it is made of 'pulverized glass sprayed onto ferrous steel panels and then fired. It’s like dental veneers,' Scoren explained."—Louise Sandhaus, Earthquakes, Mudslides, Fires & Riots: California and Graphic Design, 1936-1986, pp.100
