[History Student Work] Design in Service: Constructivism, Brutalism, and the Social Purpose of Design

1

This student-authored digital booklet examines how Constructivism positioned design as a tool for social change rather than personal expression. Through the work of Alexander Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova, and Vladimir Tatlin, it explores the movement’s emphasis on labor, material honesty, collective purpose, and political ideology. The booklet also traces these ideas into Brutalist architecture through Boston City Hall, showing how Constructivist principles continued to influence later discussions of public function and social responsibility in design.
