TAP PORTUGAL: THE IMAGE OF A PEOPLE Identity and Design of the National Airline (1945-2015)

1

TAP PORTUGAL: The Image of a People is an exhibition held at MUDE (Lisbon) that explores the identity and design of the Portuguese national airline from 1945 to 2015. Structured in five chronological sections corresponding to TAP’s five logos, it presents a wide range of materials including visual communication, uniforms, advertising campaigns, interior design, onboard objects, archival documents, and both realized and unrealized projects, highlighting the contribution of designers, artists, and agencies to the airline’s corporate identity.

The exhibition is also extended through a publication that preserves its memory for the future, going beyond the format of a traditional catalogue. It brings together multiple perspectives on the exhibition and a representative selection of exhibited objects organized by thematic nuclei, while inviting specialists from different fields to reflect on TAP’s history and meaning. This editorial work emphasizes the scale of TAP’s visual culture and the role of design in shaping both the airline’s identity and an international image of Portugal and its people.
