Kumamon as a visual branding for Kumamoto prefecture in 2010

This character, Kumamon, was created by Manabu Mizuno and good design company in 2010. The purpose of the character was to promote Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan. “Kuma” means bear in Japanese.

Kumamon’s design is minimal, featuring a black body and red cheeks. This simple silhouette and strong color contrast enhance recognizability.

The design was created so that anyone can easily recognize it as a visual identity for Kumamoto. The is an example that regional branding successed.
