Circle Jerks with Skanking Kid Flyer
Flyer created for the band Circle Jerks by Shawn Kerri, a woman designer and illustrator.
Born Shawn Maureen Fitzgerald, Kerri contributed significantly to the late 1970s and 1980s Southern California punk scene before her disappearance in the 90s. The flyer includes the “Skank Kid”, or the mascot for the band Circle Jerks. In an interview about the design of the Skank Kid, Kerri had noted, “’[…] the reason he has sort of a bland face was because I wanted everyone of those kids to think they were him… He was everyone of those little beach brats’” (Grushkin). The “Skank Kid” had first appeared in a flyer for a Fleetwood show in a mini comic titled “Dance Lesson” (1980). It was officially adopted into the Circle Jerks brand when the expanded comic “Do the Slam” appeared on the lyric sheet for the Circle Jerk's album Group Sex.
Kerri uses the Skank Kid as a point of alignment, fitting the names of the other bands along with the time, date, and location along the sides of him.
