USPS Commemorative Stamp, Emancipation Proclamation 150th Anniversary, designed by Gail Anderson, issued January 1, 2013. This rectangular postage stamp features a bold, celebratory composition with layered typography in black and red ink highlighting the phrase “Henceforward Shall Be Free.” The design balances historical quotation with contemporary graphic clarity, using strong color contrast and clean typographic hierarchy to foreground the document’s central message. Commissioned by the United States Postal Service, the stamp marks the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and situates a foundational Civil War–era text within a modern graphic framework. The initial print run of 40 million stamps sold out and was followed by additional printings and a limited series of letterpress posters.
