Graphic Design Magazine #22

1

Takashi Kono (1906–1999) was a Japanese graphic designer born in Kanda, Tokyo, and is widely regarded as a foundational figure in the development of modern graphic design in Japan. He played a key role in shaping postwar Japanese visual culture and served on the design committee for the 18th Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Kono developed a distinctive design language by blending Western modernism with the refined visual traditions of the Edo period. One of his notable works is the cover of Graphic Design 22 (グラフィックデザイン 22), which reflects this synthesis through structured geometric forms and rhythmic patterning. The work bridges graphic design and visual culture, referencing historical Japanese design frameworks while presenting them in a modern, systematic way.
