Patternalia: An Unconventional History of Polka Dots, Stripes, Plaid, Camouflage, and Other Graphic Patterns (2015) by Jude Stewart is a book about exactly what you’d expect, especially if you read the title. The cover design is the subject of our conversation today, though. The cover design is credited to Oliver Munday, a graphic designer based in New York City who specializes in book cover design. The cover features exactly what you’d expect for a book focused on patterns: a giant “P” for Pattern with patterned fill, consisting of stripes, polka dots, and plaid. The design follows a very minimalistic theme throughout, both on the outside and on the inside. This theme plays into the rise in modernism and minimalism in the lead-up to the present day graphic design scene.
