Knoll Gavina Group showroom
"In 1968, Knoll acquired Gavina SpA, an Italian furniture company started in 1960 by Dino Gavina to represent emerging Italian modernists and, in 1962, acquired the rights to produce iconic designs by Marcel Breuer. Designers in the Gavina Group: Cini Boeri, Marcel Breuer, Kazuhide Takahama, Sebastian Matta, Tobia Scrapa, and Vigo Magistretti. To celebrate this acquisition, Massimo and Lella Vignelli designed a temporary showroom for the collection at Knoll. 'We bisected the space with supergraphic neon signs showing the designers names in different colors, sandwiched between two walls of sheer fabric. We then hung the classic furniture on the walls, therefore reversing the hierarchy of planes to provide a different perspective of the classic products, while the new Gavina furniture remained on the floor. The walls and the floor were white, illuminated only by the color of the neon lights. This was one of several installations we designed by using neon as a source of color within a neutral space. It is a simple, but dramatic, device.'"—https://vignellicenter.tumblr.com/post/623200993306378240/in-1968-knoll-acquired-gavina-spa-an-italian
