In 1980 Joseph Muller-Brockmann published the design manual for the Swiss Federal Railways. It uses the Swiss design grid system to create icons and signage. This wayfinding system was designed to be both legible and adaptable. The signs use the Helvetica typeface due to its legibility. The grid has allowed the icons to be easily updated over the years. The logo was also designed as part of this design manual which is a combination of directional arrows and the Swiss flag.
