Stairs and Shadow

This photo was taken by Iwao Yamawaki, one of the only three Japanese nationals who attended the Bauhaus in Dessau. During his period at the Bauhaus, he explored the fields of architecture and photography. His photography was heavily influenced by an avant-garde movement, by the Neues Sehen (The New Vision), from the 1920s and 1930s that encourage the use of ordinary scenes in an unfamiliar perspective. This included experimentation with angels, use of light and shadow, and exposure. This photo of stairs at an unknown location shows that influence and gives the viewer an unusual perspective.

Iwao was one of the few Japanese students at the Bauhaus. It is known that he, as long as his wife Michiko Yamawaki, had a significant impact on the Bauhaus. They brought their cultural perspective into the school. This included the integration of Japanese aesthetics with Bauhaus principles. This was evident in the teapot design, created by Marianne Brand, that had a combination of Japanese forms and modularity.
