Johannes Itten made important discoveries in color theory from 1919 to 1922 while teaching at the Bauhaus in Germany. His new way of studying color mixed careful analysis with the study of how people felt about colors. He said: "Color is life; for a world without color appears to us as dead... Colors are the children of light, and light of their mother." This quote shows how he saw color as basic to human life. His ideas came from earlier color experts like Goethe and Chevreuil, but he made them easier to understand and use.
Itten made a 3D model shaped like a sphere. The sphere shows twelve colors. These colors are placed to show which ones work well together and which ones are opposites. His work still shapes how we think about color today. His ideas about warm and cool colors are still used in many fields. Interior designers use these ideas. Visual communication experts use them too.
