This conceptual set design was created by Alexandra Exter, a painter and designer who produced influential works as part of the Russian avant-garde movement (particularly within Suprematism, Abstractionism, and Constructivism). Notable features of this design include dynamic lines evincing scaffolding, ladders, and construction equipment, muted gray, blue, and orange colors, and stacked, geometric squares.
Exter's theatrical design work, which comprised set and costume designs alike, were experimental in nature and visually reflected the values and ideals of the avant-garde, Constructivism, and Suprematism. This design uses dark, silvery colors and tense geometry to depict a cityscape, mirroring the Constructivist interest in urban environments and mechanical perfection. Tones of orange, blue, and yellow parallel the primary colors commonly seen in modernist design, and the work features a heavy emphasis on vertical, architectural forms.
