This wallpaper design by May Morris is a color woodblock print featuring poppy flowers and other foliage. This design was featured in a book of patterns published by her father's company, Morris & Co.
May Morris was a talented designer who was overshadowed by her father's legacy for a long time. However, her contributions to the Arts and Crafts movement propelled women's involvement in the art arts forward. She founded the Women's Guild of Arts in 1907 in reaction to the Art Workers' Guild not allowing women to join. The guild allowed women to push their way into the professional art world rather than remain relegated to domestic craft. There was also significant crossover between the WGA and first wave feminist movements for women's suffrage in England.
