This object is a visualization of the USA's gdp growth from 1960 to 2008 utilzing a combination of visual, written, and audio information to depict how presidents have responded to recessions in the past. The bar graph highlights years in which the US had been in an economic recession, using blue bars and interactivity. The viewer can click on these time periods to listen to breif speeches from economists on both the context of the recessions and how presidents responded to them.
This graph draws on the ideas of 19th century designers. Graphics such as the bar graph first came to life in the early 19th century most popularly with the works of William Playfair (Michael Friendly).
