Cover for December 1895 Issue of Puck Magazine

850

Illustrated by Frederick Burr Opper, the satirical cartoon for this issue's cover is titled “We are getting there fast” and visualizes what some people think allowing women to be more progressive in society would do.  The woman is dressed in trousers along with a monocle, tie, cane, top hat, and a jacket with puffy sleeves that were fashionable for women at the time. She is dropping a young man home for the night, appearing taller and visually more masculine than him. The mother of the boy is seen in the background dressed similarly and holding a magazine titled “The Advanced Woman” which represents magazines and editorials that promoted progressive women. At a time when more women wanted to wear trousers for their comfort and movability, the cartoon makes fun of how letting women wear trousers could get out of hand quickly.
