Homer D. Babbidge
This print is titled “Homer D Babbidge” and is part of a suite of 15 prints created by University of Connecticut faculty in 1982. This is a serigraph print produced during the hundredth anniversary of the University of Connecticut by Gus Mazzoca. It is printed on Lenox 100 paper and is 20x26in without the deckle edge. It is annotated #62 out of 150. All other known proofs and impressions have been destroyed along with the screen. It was printed in Farmington Connecticut at JME Graphics INC.
The print shows a portrait of Homer Babbidge with the words “Oui Transtulit, Sustinet”, “University of Connecticut President 1962-1972”, “A man for all seasons”, and “Centennial 1882-1982”. Homer D Babbidge was president of the University of Connecticut from 1962-1972 and now has the campus library named after him. The text is set in all caps, in a spaced out manner, forming an arch over the portrait of Babbidge. Portraits of university presidents would often be considered pretty serious but this print puts a playful, experimental manner behind it by using loose and colorful text to pair with the highly saturated effects on the portrait.
