View of the Sumida River 隅田川の眺め
This painting, created by Katsushika Hokusai who is a famous Ukiyo-e painter in Edo period, is from ‘Fine Viewa of the Eastern Capital at a Glance’, vol. 1 which is a color woodblock-printed illustrated book, Japan, 1800. Two women are looking at the Sumida river in Edo (now Tokyo). The Japanese letters written in the background seem to be poems about the Sumida River. One of Hokusai's most famous pieces in the ukiyo-e print genre, the Sumida River captures the vibrant ambiance of the river thanks to his deft use of perspective and minute details.
