The ukiyo-e prints were very popular as street entertainment in Edo. Utagawa Kuniyoshi, who was well-known for his love of cats, was the driving force behind this trend at the time. The title "ヲゝいたい" alludes to something "painful (like being scratched by a cat)", even though the woman shown doesn't appear uncomfortable. Instead, it shows a nice, ordinary moment in the life of a cat-loving woman.
