Utagawa Hiroshige was one of the most influential artists of his time. His impact was also extended to America and Europe in the late nineteenth century. He designed this piece in 1855 and was part of the Rodbell Family Collection. The Rodbell Family Collection is especially consist of works from Hiroshige's landscape series, Famous Places in the Sixty-Odd Provinces (1853) and One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1857).  This woodblock print (Ukiyo-e) is included in the Famous Places in the Sixty-Odd Provinces and shows the Naruto Strait, one of Japan's tidal whirlpools.
