Lady Eleanor Butler and Miss Ponsonby, “The Ladies of Llangollen.”

350

This print or potential book illustration depicts “The Ladies of Llangollen.” While its origins are currently unknown, the print could have likely existed in Llangollen as a token of this historical, famous story.

Lady Eleanor Butler and Miss Ponsonby were meant to be wedded to two men and in an act of defiance moved away to Plas-Newyyd, Wales. They spent the rest of their lives together, drawing much attention to the nature of their relationship and many questioning its depth.

This portrait documents the two ladies in a process block illustration. It is potentially a wood block print. The documentation of these ladies is fairly widespread, with further prints, illustrations, and ceramics inspired by the pair. The documentation of queer history through design is imperative.
