This item is a digital copy of a copper engraved illustration dating back to the 16th-century by Theodor de Bry, and his sons, Jan Theodor and Jan Israel. This depiction is plate number VIII of XLII engraved plates chronicling the explorations of the Americas by Europeans.
The engravings depicts the Timucua people and their leader, Athore, showing French Huguenot, René Goulaine de Laudonnière, a column previously erected by Jean Ribault. The engravings are based on watercolors by Jaques Le Moyne de Morgues, a French artist and member of Jean Ribault's expedition to Florida.
