This graphic designed in London by the Terrence Higgins Trust displays information relating to the presence of HIV in London's Gay Scene.  The Terrence Higgins Trust is a charity that campaigns and provides services relating to HIV and sexual health; particularly focusing on ending the transmission of HIV in the UK.

This particular poster displays statistical information gathered by a charity to highlight the presence and severity of HIV in London's Gay community. Rather than presenting their information in a pie chart or other common statistical visual representation, this graphic chose to opt directly to a type-based format. By choosing a type-based display, the designer summarizes the research of the organization into its most notable point, available to viewers at a quick glance. By summarizing their complex research into an easily digestible and decipherable format, the designers allow for maximum retention of information to those who may be quickly passing by.

The Terrence Higgins Trust chose to display their most eye-catching/notable statistic (“1 in 7 gay men on the London gay scene has HIV”) upon the front of one of the most iconic symbols of London culture –– the red double-decker bus. By placing their research on a symbol of London culture, the designer is controlling the narrative of the foundation’s findings by visually communicating with viewers that HIV is a present and local issue, not just one that affects the gay community, but London as a whole.
