Braille Writing System

496

This system was created by Louis Braille which consisted of raised dots arranged in a cell, and inspired by Charles Barbier’s “night writing” used for nighttime battlefield communication. The braille cell is numbered 1-2-3 from the left downward, and 4-5-6 from the right downward.  When people are writing braille, they write from right to left using a slate to print the dots onto the paper so that when the paper is flipped, the dots are raised. It is a tactile system that allows blind and visually impaired people to read and write worldwide. It isn’t only limited to English, but other versions for musical notation, shorthand, and other languages of the world are available. It is definitely important as a system to include and make language accessible for everyone.
