Experimental Video playlist

1019

Derrick Schultz’s  Experimental Video playlist includes links to these works. According to Schultz these works , which he acquired a few years ago, are from the collection of film theorist, Gene Youngblood.

These were all tapes of works he would show students at UNM Sante Fe in the early 90s. I’ve been slowly digitizing them and posting what I can to my YouTube channel.

The compilation includes the following works :

  • Obmaru (Patricia Marx)
  • High Voltage (James Whitney and Jordan Belson)
  • Electronic Masks (Barbara Sykes)
  • Audio Video Rituals (Ernest Gusella)

The history of motion graphics, or motion design, evolved out of the abstract animation experiments of many artists, some of whom also had commercial practices. The works included in this playlist are examples of mid-century, American, experimental animation by artists that are quite graphic in form. Although not used as motion graphics, they point the way toward potential commercial applications.
