4th INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL EXHIBITION OF PRINTS IN TOKYO 1964

This is the promotional poster for the '4th International Biennial Exhibition of Prints in Tokyo.' He transformed Hiroshige Utagawa's (master of the ukiyo-e woodblock printing tradition) traditional depictions of mountains into abstract, in which the thin lines resemble a topographical map that conveys the relief of the land. These lines manipulate the audience’s perception and evoke the tactile sensations of wood grain or water rippling. The poster also features a red hand stamp at its center, which is a customary seal used by Japanese families. Despite providing a stark contrast to the rest of the design, the stamp serves to reveal Utagawa's perspective on the landscape.
