Tove Jansson, The Moomins, and Anti-Fascism

4

Tove Jansson's Moomins first appeared in the early 1930s in Garm magazine, an antifascist satire magazine in Finland that ran from 1929-53. She illustrated both of the Garm magazine covers shown, and the second one is where Moomintroll first appeared! Jansson illustrated and wrote The Moomins and the Great Flood in 1945, which was their first appearance outside of Garm.  Due to Jansson's personal beliefs and wartime tensions the Moomins naturally became symbols for antifascism, climate crisis (before the knowlege about the climate crisis was widespread), and were inherently anti-capitalist and queer.
