Crow-Quill Studios designed the Holiday Greetings cards for American President Lines for several years. This card was intended to go to customers of the shipping company during Christmas Holidays. APL wanted it to be a non-sectarian, because of their diverse customer base. So Jaren Dahlstrom, the founder, creative director, and head designer for Crow-Quill Studios selected this antique fan with a depiction of Western ships at anchor in Canton Harbor, China. American President Lines and its predecessor companies have been operating since the California gold rush in 1849. Extending the shipping service to Asia and China and eventually worldwide. So depicting both a beautiful and historically correct depiction of APL's involvement in international and celebration of trade was very appropriate and appreciated by the company's customer base. The registered sculpted die created an air of elegance and sophistication by reinforcing the contours of the fan. Below the fan, and the red line was trimmed short, to expose a flat gold foil stamp stripe. Which provided a touch of elegance and invitation to open and reveal the greeting.
