Phase 2

1

•This piece was created by Michael Lawrence Marrow, who was born in the Bronx. He tagged under the name of Phase 2 in order to make his existence known, though keeping his privacy.

•He brought up the idea that tagging and graffiti art was often made by disadvantaged urban teenagers in order to have some form of representation of their presence.

•Phase 2’s art was influential, since it started the trend of bubble letter (“softie”) style of graffiti art. Phase 2 was used by later graffiti artists, with other styles like stars and arrows being enthused.

•Graffiti art was a huge step in urban graphic design, allowing for a new style of art to be formed, based on breaking the rules.

•His art was also used to promote hip-hop culture and advertisement, which was rising in the city during the 1970s.
