EAGLE Turquoise drawing pencils 3H

4

I found this box of pencils among a couple other items in my father’s old drawing and drafting supplies. He is not alive for me to ask but these items could have also been his grandfathers. The dramatically thin typeface and  vibrant color is strikingly refreshing.

Berolzheimer, a German immigrant, opened Eagle Pencil Company in New York City as a little shop in 1856. The Turquois line of pencils were sold in the first half of the 20th century. The pencils pictured could be from the 1930s-90s.

These EAGLE Turquoise Drawing Pencils are “chemi-sealed”, a production patented in 1933 (in both the USA and England) to solve a problem at the time. Previous pencils would be made using oily materials which would conflict with the glue that held the lead in the wood. The lead would be treated twice in two different chemicals to seal it, leading to the label chemi-sealed. This is mentioned on the back of the box as ‘super bonding’.

When WWII started, the EAGLE Pencil Company ceased pencil production to make secret military equipment. Afterwards, pencil production continued but post war corporate acquisitions encouraged the company name change to ‘Berol’. Later the company would be sold and eventually in the factory closed in 2010.
