Interview with Trey Johnston

9

Johnston & Malone Bookstore was founded in Auburn, AL in 1953, and it is one of  Auburn's few remaining historical sites. Through his interview, Trey Johnston – son of the co-founder – gives insight into how the bookstore officially became J&M and how it impacted his own life.

This interview is relevant to Graphic Design history because it shows how local vendors can have a long-lasting impact on their community. Johnston discusses how J&M has maintained competition with nearby chain stores because the Auburn citizens value its history. The store is a family tradition in itself, and tradition is a core principle of both the city and the University. Therefore, the values presented in this interview supports the PGDA's mission that any piece of graphic design should be preserved, not just work by big name designers.
