Shiseido Space Flash

9

This poster was designed by Hosogoe Rintaro in 1967.  He was born in 1938 in Morioka city which is the capital of Iwate Prefecture. He graduated from Tama Art University and is known for his work at Shiseido which included advertising and commercials.

This is an advertisement for the cosmetics company, Shiseido. They are marketing one of their lipstick shades which is in coral, a very common color in the 1960s.  The concept of the poster is a reflection of its time, this promotion was made during the Space Age that lasted from the 1950s to the 1970s. This gives the poster what we would now call a retro futurism vibe. Which is an art form that depicts how people of the past saw the future. The designer uses a combination of photography, illustrations, photo editing, and text. The poster is centered and the text reads Shiseido in its classic font, The New Wizard Make Up, Space Flash. The two words, Space Flash are in a red circle font that look similar to font that you might see on a digital clock. The woman's outfit is close to an astronaut's suit with lines on her body that make her look like a hologram. The background is black but fades into blue, as if she were an astronaut returning to earth from space, the sun is at the top of the poster it is quite small and cartoonish looking.
