Faces By Mac Miller

“Faces” by Mac Miller was produced and released independently in 2014 by the artist, and additionally was released onto Apple and Spotify streaming platforms by the artist’s family in 2021 along with the production of a music video following his untimely death. The album itself is arguably the best album to come from the artist according to multiple critical reviews of the work, specifically pointing to the exploration of struggles with mortality, addiction, and mental health seen within its content. The music within is described as rap or hip hop with a psychedelic feel incorporated with traditional jazz and includes the collaborations of many artists on the 24-track project, which was named the 18th best rap album of 2014 by Rolling Stones.  Although it was originally released in 2014, with its re-release in 2021 it reached the top 10 charts selling 32,000 vinyls in the first week of its new release setting a sales record for R&B, Hip hop and Rap albums. 

The artwork of the album was created by Miller McCormick, which is actually the brother of the artist and the one responsible for multiple of the now famous albums from Mac Miller. McCormick is a graphic designer in his own life however he often helped to create these album covers in connection with his brother. Although it is not specified by the graphic artist, by exploring the content of the album, color, shape, and media from the 60s-70s such as movies, music and literature quotes are used as samples within the tracks and seem to be main themes which lend themselves to the colorful and abstract illustrations on the cover, along with the psychedelic and jazz influence of the album that can be seen in the organic shape and movement seen within the collage of figures which are relatively subjective to the viewers interpretation.
