Jack Straw's was a local music and dinning pub opened in late 1989 by Chandler and Martha Spawr. It was located on 1936 E 7th Street in Charlotte, North Carolina. They wanted a neighborhood gathering space open to 'all walks of life' from 'little old ladies to the hippies and the bikers'. The name was from the Grateful Dead song "Jack Straw" , but they didn't want to be labeled as the "deadhead hangout" so the bowler hat and tie were added to the logo. The motto "tavern of taste" was in regard to the pub like atmosphere they wanted to create. They were music fans, so they started allowing small local acts and later bringing in more well-known artists to perform 6 nights a week. By 2000 Martha and Chandler had two kids and with the heavy work hours they sold the business to Jackalope Jacks (at the moment, Jackalope on the Corner).

There were two signs, one was given to Sam Nicholson who owns SandwichMax, who later had it auctioned off for charity. The other was originally in Jackalope Jack's, before they sold the location and moved. Mark, who owns the Tipsy Burro, loved Jack Straw's and talked about it fondly found the sign in the dirt behind Jackalope as they were selling everything in order to move. He picked it up for free, his brother-in-law made the wooden frame, and hung it in the Tipsy Burrow where it is today.

The creator of the logo was Chandler Spawr. It was open from 1989 to 2001. Many look back and talked fondly of Jack Straw's as a small, local, community hang out and it had grown a sizable following even after its closure.
