Gail Anderson is an African-American graphic designer based in New York. She attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and has been making monumental strides in her career as a black woman in Graphic Design. Some of her most notable positions in design include design and design firms,  advertising agencies, and publications. Her work has received awards from major design organizations, including the Society of Publication Designers and the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA). In 2008 she received a Lifetime Achievement Medal from the AIGA. Gail Anderson is a well-esteemed designer who has made so many important strides for black women in graphic design. This commissioned piece made for the United States Postal Service “Emancipation Proclamation Freedom Stamp” was so important because it symbolized being set free from legal, political, and social restrictions in society as a law. In addition, her being the second African American designer to create this stamp really set the tone for the importance of this poster.
