The Women's war of 1929 in Nigeria

9

In 1929, 10,000 women in Nigeria rioted against British colonial rule. The British colonial regime had installed Warrant Chiefs, disrupting traditional women's institutions and facing accusations of exploitation, which sparked protests when taxation threatened to disempower women further. Though the Women's War protests were non-violent, their brutal suppression by the British revealed the difficulties Nigerian women faced in resisting colonial authority that eroded their status by empowering patriarchal rule. This tax was imposed on women. The woman recognized or credited with the organization of this riot is Nwanyereuwa of Igbo origin.
