To Enjoy American Opportunities Become An American Citizen

This is a lithographic print advertising the many opportunities that exist for immigrants to the United States. Looking at this print, you can clearly spot the influence of modernist design and Jan Tschichold's design pillars. The heading reads “To Enjoy American Opportunities”, followed by “Become An American Citizen” with many phrases in the background such as “A better place to live”, “schools”, “peace", and “plenty wealth and work”, with all of these echoing the sun rays in the background. A collage element is brought in with a pointer finger and a group of people layers on top of one another occupying the left side of the composition. Sporting a limited color palette, this design employs modern design aesthetics to engage its audience and advertise America as being full of these new age opportunities for reform that many branches of modernism are founded upon.

Fear is still used here, despite the bright, happy, and promising vibe the design gives off. Only this time rather than the fear being directly in the design, it lies in its shadow. It's what the failure of doing what this design tells you to do is prophesized to bring you by the information in the design. People are therefore compelled to immigrate to America in the hopes of gaining what they don't have and living a better life as a result of it, fearing that staying in their current situation will lead to a worse life. This advertising tactic persists today in many commercialized product advertisements, with products promising you will be better off if you use what they sell by showing/telling what your life will be like once you get it.
