Minori Cigarette Poster

350

This cigarette ad poster was designed by Hisui Sugiura, who worked for the Monopoly Bureau of the Ministry of Finance making cigarette posters and packaging. After being influenced by art nouveau, he became a pioneer of graphic design in Japan.

With the emergence of photography, designers became increasingly interested in the idea of hand-made designs that cannot be replicated with photography. This poster reflects this sentiment with a dynamic composition, simple colors, and organic lettering. The text and blocks of color create dynamic angles. The blocky lettering and simple imagery mirrors the angularity. The result is a cohesive poster that is simple yet eye-catching that cannot be replicated with photography alone.
