Land O’Lakes Logo

The original Land O'Lakes logo featured a Native American woman. However, it received criticism for perpetuating stereotypes and cultural insensitivity. In February 2021, Land O'Lakes announced it was removing the image of the Native American woman from its logo, citing a desire to update the brand's packaging and image. The original Land O'Lakes logo featuring a Native American woman was created by an artist named Arthur C. Hanson. The logo was first used in 1928 when the Land O'Lakes Cooperative Creamery was looking to update its packaging and branding. Arthur C. Hanson's design became iconic and remained in use for several decades.

The artist responsible for redesigning the Land O'Lakes logo in 1954 and creating the iconic image of the Native American woman was Patrick DesJarlait. DesJarlait was an Ojibwe artist from Red Lake, Minnesota, and his design has become closely associated with the Land O'Lakes brand. The logo he created was used for many years before the company decided to change it  as mentioned earlier.

As designers, we must acknowledge our own identities and privilege's when it comes to representing other classes or ethnicities. However,  DesJarlait's logo was erased despite him being a Native American.
