Charlotte, NC Leather Postcard

4

This leather postcard, made in 1906, was unique in that is was made out of deer skin. Postcards similar to these were popular from 1904 to around 1907 and usually included illustrations or different hand lettering. The process of making leather postcards involved the use of "pyrography" which is the use of a sharp tool with a hot tip that is used to burn and illustration or letterform onto the leather skin. Some came as a series that could be pieced together like a puzzle or with holes on the side to be sewn together into something that resembled a stuffed pillow.
