The Pterodactyl Club & The 13-13 Club Ad

The Pterodactyl Club and The 13-13 Club were two of Charlotte's most iconic 80s/90s nightclubs. Both popular spots for UNC Charlotte students, the venues were core to the alternative music scene. The now-defunct clubs featured a diverse range of genres, including punk, metal, and even techno! The Pterodactyl Club in particular has left a big legacy, so much so that to this day there's an active Facebook group for its former goers and fans.

The clubs' choice of typefaces reflect the alternative culture they carried. Both logos use very stylized display fonts, with The Pterodactyl Club using a font reminiscent of primitive stone tablets and The 13-13 Club using a horror-inspired blood dripping font. Secondary typefaces include a tall skinny sans serif to give a casual feel. As well as highly stylized serif fonts to both push that casual feel but also to help differentiate themselves from the typical newspaper ad. The Pterodactyl Club's dinosaur mascot pushed this club's unique branding and left an impression on the viewer. To this day you can still find second hands tees with this mascot at the forefront.
