History of Motion Graphics Lecture - Rhythm of Vision: Afrofuturism + Motion Design (1961–1988)

Presentation by research archivist, Tony Best, commissioned by Louise Sandhaus for History & Now of Motion Graphics class at CalArts, Spring 2023. The presentation defines Afrofuturism and covers work inspired by the space age, Visual Music, and jazz. 

These works include film and music videos featuring Sun Ra, Parliament, Earth Wind & Fire, and album covers and music videos featuring Motown artists, works by the experimental filmmaker of L.A. Rebellion, and concludes with the exhuberant music video featuring Michael Jackson, "Leave Me Alone." These individual videos includes title designs and special effects by JR & Associates, title design by Wally Veevers, video effects by Ron Hays, album art design by Gribbitt! and Overton Loyd; animator, Jim Blashfield and Associates and covers the influence of the Scanimate analog computer animation system.
