Posters for the Washington DC mayoral race, promoting candidate Justin “Yaddiya” Johnson, inspired by Chica posters of Peru. Organized by the People's Platform Poster Project (Joseph Orzal and Katie Pettit) to discuss issues relevant to DC: statehood, investing in youth, affordable housing.

Slogans were written by community members and sent to folk curator Alfredo Villar and Rita Mare in Peru, where the posters were printed and shipped back to Washington DC. “Those colors don’t exist in DC,” says Orzal. “The whole style is completely new and we need that type of energy here.”

“A lot of the youth have become disenchanted with politics,” Johnson says. “I’m basically looking to intertwine culture and politics to get people more interested again, and give them some symbols and jargon they can actually understand. I just want to speak the people’s language.”
