Although not kinetic, Katy Perry's “Birthday” uses a combination of handmade typography and live action video, showing the versatility of typography in lyric videos. The theme is made clear in the video as the camera zooms in and out onto different lyric-clad birthday-items: cakes, cupcakes, disco balls, and banners. The lyrics are written in frosting, cut out of raw cake batter, assembled with sprinkles, and spelled out with birthday candles. “Birthday” is a fun, real life twist on the traditional, digital, and two-dimensional lyric videos that were flooding YouTube at the time. Watching feels like you're planning a birthday party.
