May 1990 Inside Sports Magazine Michael Jordan Cover
This is an Inside Sports magazine cover of Michael Jordan that was issued in May 1990. Launched by Newsweek in 1979, Inside Sports was a major U.S. magazine that featured general sports of interest. The magazine was a rival to SPORT Magazine and Sports Illustrated, providing monthly issues. Later, it was aquired by the owner of SPORT Magazine, Petersen Publishing Company, in June 1998. From this, the magazine came to be known as SPORT and after 54 years ended production in August 2000. The cover features a photo of the NBA player in the process of dunking along with three other small images of him placed towards the bottom. It also features mainly red and yellow bold type which in a way, frames the image of Jordan and guides the viewer's eyes towards the image. This magazine issue includes special sections on Jordan, including his rivalry with N.Y.'s Patrick Ewing, his basketball skills evolution, and a personal photo scrapbook. This magazine is not only a good graphic design piece, but it also serves as a reminder of how advertsing design evolved from static type and illustrated imagery to a dynamic composition that uses a combination of photography and flat forms.
