This poster was created by Alexander Calder for George McGovern's presidential campaign against Richard Nixon in 1972. McGovern was seen as the peace candidate in this election, known for his outrage about the U.S.'s involvement in the Vietnam War. Because of this stance, many artists such as Calder (and even Andy Warhol) agreed to create campaign posters for him. This poster in particular showcases a grassroots style that was developing in the United States at this time, encouraging artistic expression and individual style. This can be seen in the humanistic, almost calligraphic hand-drawn type that he uses, as well as the organic circles using various weights, sizes, and color shading. An artistic expression like this used for politics was not seen at quite this level again until Obama's 2008 presidential campaign.
