This is the album cover for "Percussion Classics," featuring the Hamburg Philharmonic conducted by Karl Reiner, performing “Ravel's Bolero” and Tchaikovsky's “1812 Overture."
The cover was designed by Sam Suliman (1925-1998), the dynamic modernist renowned for his geometrically abstracted and minimal forms.
Suliman actively designed in the '60s. Every work of his is completely unique, but still rests in his distinct style. The simple geometry would always be in harmony with the music to be discovered within, as well as subtly hinting at the artist involved and prominent instruments of the recording.
For example, this particular composition utilizes repetition of bright circles and lines. The circles on the right hand side could symbolize the cannonballs being fired at the end of the “1812 Overture." On the left, the four larger circles could symbolize the timpani in “Ravel's Bolero.”
